New Year's Day at the Fur
Fur Night Club, 33 Patterson St NE, Washington, DC 20002

My brother pointed out to me before I left that the Fur had had a playboy playmate, Christi Shake, host their New Year's Eve event.

I stood second in line and talked with Neita. She was waiting for her brother Jason, who plays congas for Publicity. We talked for a bit. She used to sing when she was young. TT was a little in back of me in line. She introduced me to some of her friends, including one named Tiffany. They took my pen (the first time that's happened to me in a while), so all of what I have written is off the top of my head. TT, who is Mama Chelle's sister, was also celebrating her birthday with Moet and apple martinis. Neita introduced me to her brother. Also there, not in any particular order: Shorty Q, Selena & Trina, Supa Dan, Cindy & Kiki, Kim, Lolo, & Danielle, Archie Paige, Tyrell, Mama Chelle, Delano, Ray, Monique, Nikki, Shonda, Shauny, Mia (a bartender at Cranberries), Choo Choo, Net Boo, Britney (with a new hairdo), June and Shadonna. I introduced myself to Sherray (Always Showtime!!) whom I recognized from her avatar. She introduced me to Ro'chelle (toosweet).

Publicity Band
Three male vocalists (including Big Buck), Kamise (female vocalist), a trombone player, a sax player, a trumpet player, Jason (percussion), a cowbell player, at least two keyboard players, a bass player, a guitar player, a drummer.
They started grooving instrumentally, then Big Buck did shout outs, especially to TMOTT, then there was a pause before they started performing. After the first song, which Kamise led but I didn't recognize, she said, "That was a song for the fellas, now a song for the ladies...", then she led Mary J. Blige's Be Without You, then they performed Jamie Foxx's Unpredictable, then the crank started. Kamise also later led Lil Kim's Lighters Up and Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl. Those are the only songs I recognized other than the chant, Big Buck led about "Listen to that groovin'" the crowd responded, "Feel like moving that body". At one point the guitar player went on the left speaker and then later Big Buck went on the middle speaker. I noticed Chi Ali standing next to one of the keyboard players. Once the crank started, I really enjoyed it.

The crowd grew and it was really packed by the time L!ssen was setting up.

L!ssen
Scooby, Andre' "Tuffy" Jackson, Jasen "O" Holland, Songbird, two keyboard players, a drummer, a percussionist, a trombone player, a trumpet player, and a guy whom I couldn’t see what he was playing as he stood behind the right speaker onstage.
The trombone player started off, playing "Hail to the Redskins." The Redskins beat the Eagles 31-20 earlier in the day to clinch a playoff spot. The songs that L!ssen performed that I recognized were: their original Sunshine, D4L's Laffy Taffy with a sample from Dem Franchise Boyz’ I Think They Like Me playing at the time, Tuffy-led Djayz' Whoop That Trick, and Snoop's Drop It Like It's Hot. Scooby, Tuffy and O got on the three speakers, later just Tuffy did and then he was joined by Scooby and O. At one point, Chi Ali briefly sat in and stood on the middle speaker, he lead some chants including one about, "What do you do with your junk in the trunk?" They finished. DJ Rico asked them to perform for five more minutes, but Scooby said, "I respect Donnell to much to do that." DJ Rico kept pressing him to perform for two more minutes until Scooby relented. Scooby lead a chant of "Uh oh, uh uh oh." Then they really finished. DJ Rico said, "I asked for two minutes and he gave me two minutes." Scooby said, "I respect Donnell. He paved the way for n*ggers like me." I liked their performance. I prefer them to L!ssen Band.

Familiar Faces
The line up was (left to right): James, Mike, Halima, Donnell, DP, (behind the frontline) Dwayne, Doc, (behind Dwayne and Doc), Lorenzo, Godfather, Stomp, Smoke, Jacques
I went up front for their performance. Both Supa Dan and Archie asked me why I wasn't taking notes. When I told them why, they said I should get a pen from one of the band members.
DJ Rico joned on various members of FF as they set up. He said, "You gave James Lawson a job... I could do his job, not as well, but I could do it. I could do as well as Nephew. Mike Muse is there, the woman will be throwing panties on the stage (Mike shook his head no)... Smoke has the hardest hands in GoGo... He could bust a conga... Stomp is the only drummer who breaks all the cymbals... Godfather taught James Lawson everything he knows about GoGo. If it wasn't for Godfather, James would still be singing Barney. James is my man, even though he just gave up comic books. Donnell is my n*gga, he's the only one who can call me Rico Suave."
Donnell asked for a moment of silence for Kent "Hot Dog" Wood, a keyboard player for Rare Essence and EU who lost his life the other day (in a car accident).
Halima wore a black Black Panther Party with white printing that drew eyes' attention to it with the contrast with her dyed hair.
Halima tested walking over to the speaker, looking for impediments. I couldn't tell what kind of shoes she wore since her jeans reached the floor.
1) Halima-led Sade's Pearls - Halima ended up sitting on the stage
2) Mike-led Bobby Valentino's Tell Me - the crank started, Donnell chanted, "Eya eya" and the crowd responded, "Ho" (he repeated this a few times)

7) Donnell-led Hold the Note - Donnell and Halima held up their fists, Donnell went on the right speaker, Donnell chanted, "Wait a minute" / Percussion solo - particularly by Smoke - Donnell went back onstage
8) Alternating Donnell-led Trillville's Some Cut - Donnell went back on the right speaker, the monitor second from right started to smoke, DP called Omar over to work on it, he ended up unplugging it, James sang back up, Stomp played a dialtone and the frontline danced the bowing dance / Notorious BIG's Warning / Keith Murray's Call My Name (tease) / "Wait a minute" echoes
9) Halima-led Mariah Carey's It's Like That - Donnell went back onstage
10) Alternating Donnell-led Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love (tease) - Donnell sat on the edge of the stage with his feet on the middle speaker, he did the keyboard effects vocally / Rare Essence's Spotlight (tease)
11) Donnell-led Vinnie D's $55 Motel - Donnell stood on the middle speaker
12) Mike-led Lisa Stanfield's All Around the World (tease) - Mike stood at the edge of the stage (the left speaker was covered with jackets and stuff, so no one stood on it during their set)
13) Donnell-led Rare Essence's Overnight Scenario (tease) - Halima made a face
14) Donnell-led Rare Essence's Marinda - Donnell went back onstage, then returned to the speaker, Smoke played timbales and Jacques played congas with drumsticks
15) Donnell-led Rare Essence's What N*gga What?
16) Donnell-led Rare Essence's All Da Time - Mike and DP stood at the edge of the stage
17) Donnell-led "Southeast, South, Southeast" chant - DP went on the right speaker
18) Donnell-led "25, 25, 25" / Donnell & Mike-led Rare Essence's Work the Walls - "Get down like this", they did a pause that made the audience think they were done playing, a woman behind me called out, "Put it in like..."
19) Donnell-led "Unh, unh unh"
20) Donnell & Halima-led It Is What It Is - Donnell went back onstage before Halima's part, then back on the speaker
Donnell said, "I know what I forgot" -->
21) Donnell-led Trina Was Great - Donnell pulled Tyrell on the middle speaker and she danced with her back to the audience
At some point the monitor second from left also smoked and Omar disconnected it
22) D4L's Laffy Taffy - instrumental, literally only a few seconds
Donnell said of a woman, "That's my wife. Do you have breakfast ready?" She nodded. He said, "What will we have, eggs or waffles?"
23) Stomp briefly played a sample
I danced with Monique during the set.
DP really sweated through his shirt.

New Years' Eve at the Alexandria Hilton
A Positive Black Men's Coalition event.

Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel, 5000 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA, 22311

Since none of the other big PBMC events I've been to have allowed cameras, I didn't even try to bring mine. It was pretty easy to find a parking space. When I walked in the lobby, Packy was talking with Tamara. Tamara won her ticket off the radio. DeeDee, who was working both PBMC New Year's Eve events, was there. I talked with Cookie, I asked her why she was the only one wearing a New Year's hair band. She said the other ladies were afraid to mess up their hair. Angie and Shonda were there. I thought the weapons check was weird in that it was not in an enclosed area (you didn't need to go through it to go to the main area).

After Hours was setting up in the outer area. I ate a few desserts before they removed the dessert tables altogether.

After Hours Band
The line up was: Chi Ali, Sean (Kal'el), Pretty Nikki, another male vocalist, another female vocalist (not TJ), two keyboard players (including Rockk), a guitar or bass player (I couldn't see it close enough to tell), two percussionists, and a drummer.
Most of the band members wore black formal outfits that went with the black and white balloons around.
1) Pretty Nikki-led ?, Chi Ali stood back by the percussion, the percussion was initially really low in the mix, but the vocals were good in the mix
"Original" Nikki and Ebony were there.
2) Sean-led "I've been waiting for the day, all night long"
Tracy S., Chanel, and Darrell were there.
3) Pretty Nikki-led Alicia Keys' Unbreakable - Pretty Nikki added, "Clap your hands everybody", there was nice harmony
4) Sean-led Jamie Foxx's Unpredictable - Sean went on the floor, the crank started, Chi Ali went in front and got on vocals
5) Pretty Nikki-led "Bop bop bop ba da" - the percussion was better in the mix now
James was there.
6) Chi Ali-led Kanye West's 'Em Say
Shaun and 6'9 were there.
7) Percussion solo - Chi Ali did announcements
8) Pretty Nikki-led Floetry's Supastar
9) Chi Ali-led "Here we go, come on, After Hours to the brink of dawn, diamonds in the sky" - the other frontline members made the diamond shape with their hands that I remember from a previous performance of theirs (they held their hands palms up - with the index fingers up and the tips touching and the thumbs down and the tips touching making a diamond shape)
They were still playing, but Familiar Faces was scheduled to start, so I went in the ballroom. Unfortunately, there was DJ music being played in the ballroom, so I couldn't continue to follow After Hours from the ballroom.

Shawn, L-Boogie, Pinky, and Cindy were there.

Familiar Faces
First Set
The line up was (left to right): James, Mike, Halima, Donnell, DP, behind: Godfather (behind the left speaker), Chris Wright (keyboards, subbing for Lorenzo), Doc, Dwayne, Stomp, Packy, SmokeMBR< They were formally dressed, most of the guys in black.
I had guessed correctly that the woman with dyed red and black hair I saw coming down the escalator during After Hours’ first set was Halima (it was her second new hairdo in three days), she wore a formal red and black dress.
Donnell said, "I guess we need to use our cell phones (as mistletoe)... On behalf of the Positive Black Men's Coalition to bring the New Year in right..."
1) Donnell & Halima-led (Sade's) Cherish the Day - Donnell did a shout out to Darrell, still celebrating his birthday, Donnell said, "My baby Michel Wright is in the building"
Tata was there.
2) Mike-led Toto's Georgy Porgy - intro / Bobby Valentino's Slow Down - there was a nice crank, Donnell played with Halima's hair, Mike sang at the edge of the stage, they stopped playing, but Michel said, "Keep that groove going, I'm used to working with music... still five more minutes to 2006", Michel played the cowbell, then passed it on to Packy, she went and danced with Donnell from behind, Donnell said, "Cell phone going to be mistletoe.", Michel counted down from seven to one and confetti was sprayed on the dance floor (not sure where from, but I got a lot on me)
The ballroom was packed.
3) Donnell-led "Hey ay, Ho oh" - DP and James held their mics to the crowd for their response, the sound was really good
4) Donnell-led "Do it for the ladies/fellas, Oh my God!" - Halima posed, Donnell played with her hair, Mike posed, the crowd shouted, "Oh my God!"
Tamiko was there.
Halima said, "Happy New Year y'all".
5) Halima-led Faith Evans' Mesmerized - Funky Stuff guitar riffs, Halima's dancing/moving was wilder than usual, Donnell stood on the left speaker and DP stood on the right speaker as they played the horn hits, they faced each other
6) Mike-led John Legend's Used to Love U - Donnell and DP now faced front as they played, then they went back onstage, Mike sang at the edge of the stage, Mike said, "Anyone from the Southside? Northwest, Northeast, Glen Arden, Seat Pleasant, Capital Heights?"
7) James-led R. Kelly's Slow Wind - this was the first slow song and the dance floor cleared some, Donnell did his usual suggestion for the fellas to go buy the ladies a drink, "We'll take care of them for the next five minutes", James sang at the edge of the stage, in the middle not the left, Donnell repeatedly called out, "Bassline" and "Hey Smoke", Telando was onstage by Smoke, Someone (Mike, James or Donnell) said, "Sexual Chocolate!"

Simone, JoJo and Arielle were there.

Keisha pulled me on the dance floor, we danced. Shonda said, "I'm keeping my eye on you."

His band looked to be mostly the same as when I saw him perform on October 9th.
The line up was: Chuck Brown (vocals and guitar), the rest of the frontline (all the same as October 9th) was: Bryan Mills (sax and keyboard. He had a Korg with women's shoes on it), a young trumpet player, and a young trombonist. Chuck was on the far right. In addition, Sweet Cherie (double keyboard), a bass player, JuJu on drums, and a conga player (I didn't see him well enough to tell if it was the same guy as in October), and a cowbell player/percussionist. He was still talking when I left. I left because I thought the coat check would be a madhouse. I heard a buzzing, I thought maybe it was just me, but it was the hotel because I didn't hear it when I walked outside.

I saw Omar and Stomp (wearing his Homer Simpson slippers) on my way out.

NDB, 3DB, and Fatal Attraction at Bud's
Bud's 501 Club, 501 Morse St NE, Washington, DC 20002

I have put up the written transcript of my interview of Michelle Holmes last year online.

Bud, wearing a Santa hat, took the covers. Rob Sabbakhan, NDB's manager, was right there and he said hello.

Upstairs, Preston Blue, Kato (Fatal Attraction's co-manager), and SweetAngelmd27 all were surprised to see me.

The pre-recorded music being played was GoGo. A couple of guys traded dance moves to it.

New Dimension Band
NDB was up first. I wanted to see them with a real system. When I saw them last year in their hometown of Richmond, they didn't have big speakers. It was nice to see them in DC. Some of the faces had changed in the band. Their line up was: Steph (lead talker - he took over much of the interview I did with them), Francois (female lead singer, she wore a Michael Vick jersey), an acoustic guitar player/backup vocalists (also played tambourine), a backup vocalist/cowbell player, a bass player, two keyboard players (one of them wore a baseball cap that had 804 printed on the front and the shape of the state of Virginia on the back), Junie (percussionist - congas and timbales, he played shirtless), and a drummer. They had a nice beat going during their sound check. Steph said, "We made a long long long trip to party with our out of town relatives." Steph also did a shout out to Kato. He announced it was Junie's birthday. He also did a shout out to the haters. Steph announced that their first song was an original by Francois. They did a group prayer with the band huddled together. That first song was with acoustic guitar (he sat as he played) and percussion. The acoustic guitar wasn't used after that for the rest of the night. The sound was rough, but they definitely cranked. There's no doubt that despite them being based in Virginia that they perform authentic GoGo. They initially had about twenty fans in the audience, but it grew to about fifty by the end of their set. A group of ten or so had a GoGo pic taken then went on the dance floor and were really responsive to NDB. Nena was there, she wore a Santa hat. Rob was calling out signals to the band. Fans were beating their feet. Steph said at the end, "It's time to go right now." Rob announced an upcoming show. Their set was about an hour. Steph asked me, "Did you have a good time?" I said yes. He said, "That's where it's at."

3rd Dimension Band
This was my first time seeing 3DB. Their line up was: four vocalists (one of them a singer), a bass player, three keyboard players, three percussionists (one congas, one timbales, and one with multiple cowbells in a setup similar to Jacques from FF), and a drummer. There was also a guy sitting in a chair next to the cowbell player, I don't think he played anything. They also had a group huddle before they performed. They did a shout out to New Dimension Band and said, "We just came from the Black Hole that was crazy." They continued on NDB: "That trip from Richmond isn't an hour, that's a mission, a mission of love." They also did a shout out "to the one deuce n*ggas, we could play in Africa and they would get a green card to come see us." They started off with Donny Hathaway's This Christmas. They had a richer sound than NDB, and also cranked. They did a chant of "Where y'all from?" The frontline was very energetic, they had some nice harmony. At the end, they said, "Thank all the haters. If you down with 3DB, we out of here now." Tappy (or Taffy?), a white guy, came over and said he read my blog. We recognized each other from the recent Junkyard show. They also played about an hour.

Fatal Attraction
I recognized Wayne and Chevy from when they came to Familiar Faces shows in July and August. Teago (their other co-manager) was there. I kidded him about his Bob Marley shirt. He said, "Yeah, mon." He asked me, "Is this your first time seeing them?" I told them it was. I was looking forward to them since Ras Lidj called them "the best frontline in GoGo". Their line up (some I got from their website) was: Wayne (lead talker), Chevy (female singer), Daryl (vocalist, trumpet (he warmed up, but never played it), and cowbell), Jock and Vadda (vocalists), Brandon (bass player, played sitting down), JR and Kendall (both with double keyboards), a percussionist (congas, timbales, and roto-toms), and Ron (drummer). Wayne mentioned this possibly being a live recording. Wayne said, "We do two sets on Monday nights at the Market Lounge." They did a group talk facing the back wall before they played. A couple of people were joking about my taking notes. They also were energetic, sometimes jumping in the air, had synchronized dances, and had nice harmony. Their frontline is good, but I wouldn't say they are the best in GoGo. Their percussionist played timbales and roto-toms most of the time. He played congas both with his hands and with drumsticks. Fans were beating their feet. The security guard asked me what I was writing when I went over to watch the percussionist. They played a late song that was laid back, Chevy sang "Slow Down" (I didn't recognize it as the Bobby Valentino song). While she sang, the other vocalists and one of the keyboard players did exaggerated slow movements. They called out, "Where y'all from" and Wayne held his mic to the crowd. Daryl stood on one of the monitors. The last thing they did was, "Wack that sh*t". They finished at 3:02. Wayne said, "Hail to the Redskins." They are definitely good, but I prefer more conga play.

The one thing I didn't like was that there so many people smoking cigarettes.

As I walked out, Preston asked me, "Are they blogworthy?" I said, "Of course!"

Jimmie Parker talked with me about helping on my thesis. He said it needed to cover all aspects.

As usual, guys were handing out GoGo flyers to everyone who walked out. Nece asked me why I had flyers since I was at every show. I told her they were for different bands. I save the flyers for my thesis. JoJo asked me, "Are you taking notes right now?" I said, "No." I originally didn't take notes; everything from the blog was from the top of my head. Over time, I would bring paper to jot down things I had forgotten to write online. Then I needed to take notes when I decided to keep specific setlists - I could probably remember most of it off the top of my head, but not the proper order.

Here's another description.

Wednesday at Takoma Station
Takoma Station, 6914 4th St NW, Washington, DC 20012

I talked for a while with Derek Floyd (Donnell's second son). It was briefly interrupted when he and Marquis Melvin helped bring in Donnell's stuff. I asked him how often he performs (he's a rapper). He said not often. He said it's hard performing with a live band (like when he sits in with Familiar Faces) because he (and Donnell also) has to yell. He said that that's hard for him because he has bronchial asthma, he needs to get in shape. He said it's also hard for him when he sits in with Familiar Faces since Donnell's mic is set for Donnell's vocals, not his. He did say that he worked with Jauhar and recently finished recording his own album called "1:18 or 118" after a Bible verse. He said that his job is working with community service. He said that he had problems when he was growing up and he uses those experiences to help others. He said that he doesn't have much to give other than his heart, which he gives through his music. He said that he really respects his father as an artist (he later said his Dad doesn't really know just how much he looks up to him). He said that he tries to follow his Dad in that respect, he doesn't want to be his Dad, but that he wants to follow his professionalism (Derek didn't use those exact words, but that's what he meant). He talked about how he wants to stay humble, but it can be hard. He knows so many people around the city because of his dad and himself, some people call him "the prince of the city." He said it's hard when like at the Night of Elegance, he performed in front of 3,200 people. He said he wants to keep away from people using drugs and other negative influences. He plans to pass out a number of copies of his album in order to generate a buzz. He said it's hard to have a relationship when working in the music business. His regular job and recording take a lot of time and girls (including his girlfriend), expect a lot of time with you. He said he just finished his album and now he's working on another one. He also talked about his working with Marquis. He said he first met Marquis in Miami and met him again later. Marquis is also working with Jauhar. Derek said that he is now writing songs for Marquis. He said that Marquis can sing really well in way he can't, so it's a good match. He said they are like brothers now. He also said he thinks they are both going to succeed in the music business. He said Marquis will probably sing tonight. I told them both that Doc and Dwayne didn't really believe Marquis had quit the football team until I posted a quote from Rich Rodriguez (head coach of West Virginia's football team). Marquis smiled. Derek plans to take college classes next semester, psychology and communications because he feels they are important to bettering his art. He applauded my writing on my blog and asked if that was my profession. I told him no, but I plan to continue writing.
