WHAT? Band at the Classics
The Classics 4591 Allentown Rd., Camp Springs, MD 20746

02 had warned me that they would make me take off my shoes. Sure enough, all the security at the front had blue gloves on. Taking off my shoes was no big deal, but when the guy frisked me, I felt molested! They threw away my pen, so this entire entry is off the top of my head.

When I was waiting for them to start, PGSlim, who had been at the TMOTT Cookout, was there. I also recognized a percussionist from WHAT? Band had been at the TMOTT Cookout, Duce7.

The sound equipment guys there also work Familiar Faces shows: D and Paul. Paul asked me, "Are you here to scout?" (WHAT? Band on behalf of Familiar Faces).

Lady$tyle$ said hello to me. She was with Trina and some other people I didn't recognize.

WHAT? Band
First set
The line up was: Chris "The Rapper" Black (Second and Third Set), Stephan (spelling?) (male singer), Killa Cal (rapper), Michelle Blackwell (female vocalist), Rocket Rob (congas), Duce7 (percussion), 2 double keyboard players, guitar, bass, drummer.
1) Stephan-led DJ Play a Love Song - without percussion (other than drums)
2) Killa Cal-led Hold Your Drinks Up - Killa Cal gave me a shout out, Michelle arrived late and started performing right away
3) Michelle-led ?
4) Killa Cal-led Lil Wayne's Earthquake
5) Michelle-led Cheri Dennis' I Love You
?) Michelle-led Christina Milian's Say I featuring Young Jeezy
They cranked somewhat this set (after the first song), but so much more in the two sets that followed.

A girl I didn't recognize said "Hello Jordan" to me as I walked by during the break.

Second set
I didn't recognize any of the songs they performed except Stefan-led R. Kelly's Slow Wind. I was really impressed with how they worked the crowd - it was packed and the audience was really responsive, physically, and vocally with repeating chants.
The Rapper went over a song at the end of the set: "You know what I'm Looking at, you know what I like... I need action... When? Tonight! How you know what I'm looking at when you're not looking at me?"

Killa Cal said hello to me during the break.

During the break, some guy said to me, "What we want to know is, are you the police?"

Third set
They performed the song (Tonight) The Rapper went over in the second set.
I also recognized:
Stephan-led Johnny Nash's I Can See Clearly Now
Stephan-led Lenny Kravitz' Fly Away
Kim and Jay Gotti were there.
Again I was impressed with how they worked the crowd.
They had a fight during the set, which The Rapper reacted to by telling people to grow up. He also complained about how the bass drum kept going out every 8 measures or 20 seconds. He said, "You know it's not the WHAT? Band or Do Dirty."
They turned on the house lights after the fight.
The show was ended by 2 fights at the same time. They flashed the houselights to tell people to leave. It was only a few minutes before 3 AM anyway.
I saw Buffie (YoungOne/Sweet Buff) on my way out (she was also at the TMOTT Cook Out)

When I walked to my car, a guy said, "You was at the WHAT? Show? Damn, WHAT? brings 'em out!"

I talked with 02. He asked me where I was going to tonight. I said the Classics. He said, "They'll make you take your shoes off." He told me to get with him before I left and he'd give a Submission CD finally. I did get the CD from 02 just before I left. Here's my review: I totally hear what people told me previously: Submission really cranks and could be a secular GoGo band if they wanted to... I believe this recording is of their performance August 1, 2006 outdoors at: Harriet Tubman Elementary School 3101 13th Street NW Washington, DC 20010

Rare Essence at the Fur
Fur Night Club, 33 Patterson St NE, Washington, DC 20002

I hadn't seen Rare Essence in a while, so I decided to see them out at the Fur.
I arrived a little after 7 PM and all the women were scrambling to be considered free at 7 PM. The guy in front of me couldn't get in because he didn't have a proper ID and the guy behind me was charged $20 each for shoes and shorts.

When I walked down the steps, Yolanda and Sanisse said hello to me. They said, "You're as bad as us, going to all the shows!" Yolanda said she was celebrating her birthday tonight at J's.

I said hello to BJ before the set. We discussed the Heaven Sent show.

Derek and Markel from the same sound equipment crew as FF were there.

Rare Essence
The line up was: Dave "32" Ellis (vocals), Charles "Shorty Corleone" Garris (vocals), Tamira (female vocals), Andre "Whiteboy" Johnson (vocals/guitar), bass player, Byron "BJ" Jackson (Keyboards), Scooter? (keyboard), Darryl "Blue Eye" Arrington (drummer), Milton "GoGo Mickey" Freeman (congas), Quentin "Shorty Dud" Ivey (percussion).
First Set - started a little after 8
1) Shorty-led Remy Ma's Feels So Good - it was laid back, Shorty's mic had distortion, it was hard to make out what he was singing all night, Tamira rapped
2) Whiteboy-led "Coochie pop, ass into it, bounce hop" - Shorty Dud played the toms, it cranked
3) Shorty-led ? "feel it" - it had a keyboard intro, it cranked
4) Shorty-led Bumping My Music? - Scooter was playing pounding heavy bass
?) GoGo Mickey played a long conga solo
?) Whiteboy-led Geraldine
?) Whiteboy-led Djayz' Whoop That Trick
The last song was really loud.
GoGo Mickey played an outtro solo.
Toward the end of the set, a girl blew a kiss at me, then she came over and danced with me. Then she had to ruin it by asking me, "Do you work here?" Aside from that, I spent both sets watching GoGo Mickey play the whole time.  He had his conga in an L-shaped formation.

Stacey was there, we talked. I talked with GoGo Mickey during the break.

The lights came down really low during the break.

Second Set
32 said, "Hey Stacey"
1) 32-led Marinda - it was laid back at first, GoGo Mickey played the cowbell / Mickey conga solo
2) Whiteboy-led "Don't start no sh*t"
?) Shorty-led All Da Time
?) Shorty-led "SE, S, SE" chant - the house lights came on
?) Shorty-led "All I want to do" - Shorty said, "Why'd they turn the house lights on?"
White Boy said, "They have another party after this"
It was done a little after 10
I was really impressed with Tamira's stage presence - she danced and smiled a lot and clearly was enjoying herself. She is also very beautiful.

I went to the McDonald's nearby and ran into Mike Smith. His assessment was the same as mine, "Just when it was getting good, you had to leave..."

I drove straight from the McDonald's to Js.

Everyone was semi-formally or formally dressed. It was in the banquet hall to the right of the church. Sean said hello to me as I walked in. There were 60+ tables - not assigned seats. I sat a little to right in the back row - I couldn't see the percussion from where I sat.

2) Lawrence-led "Praise on my mind, I live to praise and I praise to live" - end of Lawrence's sitting in
3) Yannie-led (it was hard to tell who the lead singer was for each song, the person I list as lead is the person who first sang) "How many of you know that Jesus is the one? Jesus you're the one for me" - it cranked
Dave said, "God died on the cross for us, if that's not enough to make you shout!"
4) Yannie-led ? - I went to the buffet and it was hard to make out the lyrics from there, that chicken was so spicy, I had to get a Pepsi from the bar to cleanse my pallet
5) Sean-led "I can't understand why, Thank you Jesus"
6) Kimese-led "I got the victory" - it cranked
7) Tony sax solo
Dave said, "Thank you so much for having us."
I left shortly after their set. I had really only come to see them.

The Firm Project / Mambo Sauce / EU at J's
J's Sports Cafe, 12617 Laurel Bowie Rd (Route 197), Laurel, MD 20708

John said hello to me in the parking lot.

The audience varied between 20s and up.

The Firm Project

Their set was in process - they had 2 male vocalists, 1 female vocalist, a guitar player (hidden behind the left PA speaker), a bass player, a sax player, 2 keyboard players (1 triple and 1 double keyboard), a drummer, and 2 percussionists.
Their sound was much rougher than the first time I saw them perform, but they still cranked. The Firm had also had some personnel changes. I recognized Shakira's Hips Don't Lie. Except for a few people, most people were sitting or standing, not dancing.
While I was taking pictures, the members of Mambo Sauce came in. Black Boo said to me, "Didn't I just see you?"

Mad Chuck (working the PA for Mambo Sauce), Stillyeahoe (I don't know) and Delano795 (now called southern-roots1) were there.

Red sat over by me. He introduced me to his friend Shante. He called over Twink to sit by us. He said Twink had played drums for S.O.U.L.O. He also said she had bought tickets for the last 5 Mambo Sauce shows and had not gone.

Mambo Sauce
Mambo Sauce was taking L!ssen's slot.

While they were warming up, Yendy played Khari's bass.

Sound Check
Black Boo sang India Arie's Beautiful Surprise

I noticed my camera's battery was dying, so I only took 1 picture of Mambo Sauce here.

Drew, Chris, Khari, Black Boo, Yendy, Barry (behind Yendy), Pep

Black Boo said, "All originals so everything you hear you've never heard. This is your taste test"
They took several minutes to warm up.
They started around 12:20
Black Boo said this band has been a struggle; we're going to do what ever it takes to take GoGo National. (He mentioned other bands being national with them too).
1) Black Boo-led Things Will Get Better
2) Black Boo-led Sweet Baby - Black Boo asked, "Who's a single mother?" Only one woman in the audience acknowledged being a single mother. Black Boo said, "I know damn well there's more than one single mother out there.", it cranked

9) Yendy-led Go - Yendy rapped, "You never seen anything like this, you ain't never heard anything like this" - Pep played he tombs / Drew & Barry Outtro
This performance cranked, but I thought their Jammin' Java show cranked more. They had a number of people dancing, but also a lot of people sitting and standing.

I talked with Tara, whom I have seen in a long time. She said EU has always been her favorite GoGo band.

I introduced myself to Twink. She said she's seen me around. I teased her because she heard, but didn't see Mambo Sauce's performance because she was sitting down the entire time. I asked her who she played with right now, she said 4Sho.

EU
I went over and said hello to Duane Face.
The line up was: Sugar Bear (vocals and bass), Donny Ray (vocals), Tony (guitar player), Sweet Cherie (keyboard and vocals), Duane Face (keyboard), JuJu (drums), Derek (congas), and later a 2nd percussion sat in on congas when Derek was playing timbales.

Mambo Sauce - Early show at Jammin' Java
I had originally planned to go see the Funk bands Clones of Funk and Midnight Star perform at Fort Dupont Park.

However, I changed my plans when I saw on Mambo Sauce's myspace site that they were playing tonight in 2 shows.

Jammin Java, 227 Maple Ave, Vienna, VA 22180
I learned from my prior attendance of a show at Jammin' Java with Mambo Sauce opening up for SOJA to buy my ticket in advance. Mambo Sauce's website listed the start time as 8 PM and since they sometimes start early, I arrived at about 7:40.

The only person I recognized was Red, their manager. However, B (formerly Solace) of Submission Band was also there.

I immediately noticed they had a different female singer. Red told me after the set her name is Yendy Brown, a former backup singer for Aaliyah. He said that Thi Lai had strained her vocal cords. Red also told me that Yendy's first show with Mambo Sauce was the Friday performance only in front of the judges, so this was really her first performance with the band.

The audience was mostly white, high school and college age. However, there were some middle age people and even some kids.

B (in the audience), Pep, Drew, Chris (behind Drew), Black Boo, Barry, Yendy

Pep, Drew, Chris, Black Boo, Barry, Yendy

Pep, Drew, Chris, Black Boo, Barry, Yendy, Khari

They started at 8:15 PM.
Black Boo said, "Are you ready for some Mambo Sauce? I put it on everything, even the napkins"
1) Instrumental jam
2) Black Boo-led Things Will Get Better - Black Boo said "a setback is before a come back", Black Boo said, "If you're already down, you can't go down no more"
Black Boo said, "This is dedicated to the single mothers out there, who's a single mother?" Black Boo said, "Who was raised by a single mother? I listen to the radio all I hear is "Bitches and Hoes"
3) Black Boo-led Sweet Baby - Black Boo asked during the song "Who are the single mothers?" again and a guy raised his hand, Black Boo responded, "I know you ain't a single mother. Raised by one..."
4) Yendy-led No - this song was new to me, they had cranked from beginning, but the cadence kept rising, Black Boo said, "You partying out there? You like that GoGo sound?" / percussion solo -->
5) Yendy-led Fairweather -->
6) Damn Joe (intro) - Black Boo said, "How many people here already know this song? Call 93.9 and 95.5 and request it" / Black Boo-led Damn Joe
7) Guitar driven instrumental - Black Boo said, "We're Mambo Sauce and we're found at every carryout in the DC area. Let me introduce one of the baddest bands in the area" / Black Boo-led sung intro - the crank continued to rise (up to the peak of the set) / Percussion solo - punctuated by a Barry drum solo
8) Black Boo-led Cool Points - Black Boo went into the audience and danced with a female fan
9) Black Boo-led Longtime Comin' - nice power chords by Drew, it became laid back, Black Boo said, "Can I see hands in the air?", he, Yendy and fans put their hands in the air, Pep jumped around, the music went back to crankin', I noticed a guy from SOJA, Ryan Berty, playing the timbales and cymbals from the side of the stage

Ryan Berty of SOJA, Pep, Drew (The fan with his back to the camera was the guy who raised his hand that he's "a single mother")
Black Boo said, "In DC, we don't let anyone tell us... I love the Wizards, the Mystics... The one thing in DC, I don't like is Bush" - there was applause
10) Yendy-led Go - it cranked, the crowd really got into it
Black Boo said, "Let me hear you say Mambo... Sauce... Let me hear you say GoGo... Music..."
11) Drew & Barry outtro
Black Boo said, "Get ready for SOJA. Thanks for the love."

I talked with Red, then decided to go home before going to J's Sports Cafe for their late show.

Friday at Market Lounge
Market Lounge, 1309 5th Street NE, Washington, DC 20002
Packy had told me last Friday that his band, Unity Band, would be opening for NCB & Junkyard this Friday at the Market Lounge.

I got to the Market Lounge a little after 10 PM. There were a bunch of people with chairs over on the sidewalk by where I parked, across the street from the Market Lounge. As I headed across, the street, somone called out to me. Antwon said he had recognized me from helping Packy set up equipment for Familiar Faces. He told me he's the lead singer for Unity Band.

I went up and asked if I could bring my camera in, I told him I was friends with Packy and wanted to take pictures. The guy okayed it, and I went back to my car and got my camera. However, there was apparently a miscommunication because when I left at the end, Darryl (the owner?) walked me out and told me, "Security told me you were taking pictures. We don't allow that. Remember that next time you come." I can respect that, but I did ask permission ahead of time and told him so. So this will be the only time I take pictures at the Market Lounge.

Unity Band was setting up. Unity Band is: Ron (rapper), Wayne (rapper), Antwon (lead singer), Packy (backup vocals, cowbell), Carlton "Big C" (keyboard), Vaughn "Drunk" (drummer, whom I also am friends with, he helps Packy with FF's equipment a lot), and Los (percussion).
They started about 10:15 or so.

Click here to see a clip of Unity Band's performance - with Packy's permission

There was only a small crowd. Unity Band cranked and the vocalists were good, and unlike a lot of young bands, Los played more congas than timbs/toms. Although the crowd was small, it didn't phase Unity Band and everyone enjoyed themselves - me included. Ludacris' Pimpin' All Over the World was the only song I recognized. Killa Cal said hello to Packy, and then to me. He was celebrating his birthday tonight. Unity Band finished at about 11:40.

Buffie (YoungOne, now Sweet Buff on TMOTT) brought in balloons and NCB equipment. She came over to me and asked me, "Is Familiar Faces not playing tonight?" I said, "Of course, they're playing." She seemed doubtful. Jay Gotti came over to me and said, "Now you get to see how we do it!"

NCB
Their line up was: Killa Cal (lead talker), Jay Gotti (rapper), Butch (male vocalist), Rah Rah (female vocalist), T.O. (guitar), Rico (bass, sitting in from WHAT? Band), Rodney & Scoop (keyboards), Chuck (drummer), KD Styles (percussion), GoGoPJ (blocks/cowbell). Their performance was being filmed.

Packy & Antwon from Unity Band in the audience, Rico, KD Styles, Rah Rah, Jay Gotti, Butch

Chuck, Rodney, TO, Scoop

The crowd grew larger, there were 50+ people there. They cranked and had a sophistocated sound. I recognized in their set, Busta Rhyme's I Love My Chick featuring Kelis and Young Joc's It's Going Down. Killa Cal did a number of shout outs to me (FunkMasterJ) (including thanking me for showing love to all the bands) and Unity Band. They roped off the VIP area and Killa Cal had a cake on a table.

Maiah was there. I said hello to BY of Junkyard. Killa Cal said, "JY, friends of mine, until the end of time". Buggs sat in and Killa Call said, "Buggs blessed the mic." Killa Cal asked people to put their fists up when he said, "Pimp game." At the end of the performance, Killa Cal said, "I studied under Bruce Lee, he was on the second floor, I was on the first floor." Killa Cal said good bye to me on his way out. He said, "They say I'm a legend, but I'm not sure yet."

Junkyard Band was the headliner.

(Sorry I don't know Junkyard's members by sight, other than BY)

They cranked with a raw sound until nearly the end. I recognized from their set: Stevie Wonder's Superstition, the Gilligans Island theme, Dem Franchise Boyz' I Think They Like Me, War's The World Is A Ghetto, Lil Kim's Lighters Up, Nelly's Flap Your Wings, and Busta Rhyme's I Love My Chick featuring Kelis. They took a short break and most of the crowd left.

When they resumed performing, they played slow songs and it was laid back. The first song was Trey Songz' Gotta Go. They next said, "For our old old old schol, 25 and over..." I left during that song - I'm not into slow songs. As I was walking to the exit, a guy talked with me. He recognized me from Zanzibar, he told me there was a rack of new girls there.

Emergenza Festival DC Finals
9:30 Club, 815 V ST NW, Washington DC 20001
I wasn't sure whether I would put this entry up because I didn't get to see GoGo, but decided to put it up anyway.

I had bought an advanced ticket from Red the week before to see Mambo Sauce in the Emergenza Festival band competition at the 9:30 Club. This was supposed my first time seeing Mambo Sauce since I started working in my day job.

The hard rain and thunder started before I left the house. I got to the 9:30 Club at about 8:30 PM because the flyer said 9 PM. The crowd was overwhelmingly white and almost all high school and college age. The first band to perform after I arrived, The Miles, was a white Rock quartet: lead guitar, lead vocalist/rhythm guitar, bass, and drums. Their music was somewhat entertaining, but the vocalist’s singing was nothing special. They appeared to be in their early 20s. The next group up was a white Punk quartet: Elixir of Jade, the line up was: guitar/vocalist, guitar, bass, and drums. Their thrash guitar playing was noise to me, reminiscent of the noise on Green Day's Dookie (which I can't stand). They also appeared to be in their early 20s. The frontline members wore matching black formal shirts with green neckties. The next group up was Ainzlee, a white rock quartet: female keyboard player/vocalist, female keyboard player, bassist, and a drummer. The bassist looked to be in his 30s, but the rest were in their 20s. I don't who told the singer she could sing, because her "singing" was awful. For all of these bands, the crowd changed, as supporters of the bands left when their band was done performing. Sam (Black Heart), Sherray (Always Showtime!!), and Ro'chelle (toosweet) arrived. The members of Mambo Sauce and Red arrived over time, except that I never saw Thi Lai (I later learned that it was because she's been replaced by Yendy Brown because she has strained her vocal cords). The last band that I saw perform was the best of the four: Harlen Simple, a Rock quartet: white singer, black bassist, white guitar player, white drummer. They were in their late 30s+. Their singer was good and so was their playing. Their set ended with the power going out in the 9:30 Club. Although they didn't announce anything, people understood what happened and filed out. It was again pouring out. The streets were so flooded that crossing the street to walk to my car, there was no way to avoid having my shoes completely soaked. I passed a PEPCO truck on the way to my car.

Red said Mambo Sauce's makeup performance for the judges was scheduled for Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, they didn't win.
