DP, Doc, Lorenzo, and Stomp were already there when I arrived.
They were already working on Whitney Houston's You Give Good Love and Fantasia's Free Yourself.
Dwayne arrived shortly after.
They planned to have a short rehearsal - Donnell was not there. I asked why and they joked that he was hosting a male strippers party with James Funk. I asked why Lorenzo wasn't there since he had joked to me that he was a male stripper at the Hangar Club. I asked Doc at the end where he really was, he was hosting the Lock Down the City hurricane relief show at Safari Steakhouse.
They also worked on Lil Kim's Lighters Up.
When Mike Muse walked in, he said, "What the f*ck is that smell?" There was a rancid smell, but we couldn't figure out what it was.
Doc joked about what Halima and Godfather's reactions would be to their rehearsing, he imitated their voices as well as what they would say.
They said that Dwayne played as loud as Boolah on Friday. Then they talked about how loud Boolah played on Wednesday, he wasn't even on the system. Since Mike wasn't there on Wednesday, he didn't know Boolah played.
Doc said that Lighters Up (which they all called Put Your Lighters Up) is based on Julian Marley. I am pretty sure he said Julian, but it is actually based on Damien Marley's Welcome to Jamrock.
They discussed the Lock Down the City shows. They discussed who was now in Petworth. I talked about Kevin Miller. Dwayne said, "You mean KO" and described him. I said yes. He said he's a friend of his. I talked about Mambo Sauce. Stomp said all of the guys from Northeast Groovers quit because they were too busy, but Chris Wright was still with them according to a report on TMOTT the next day. They talked about why they weren't performing tonight - they had already done their part.
Marcus Lawson criticized the band, he said, "You all suck," except for his Dad and Dwayne. Dwayne said, "What are you a music critic?" DP said, "Be quiet or your Dad won't get his gas money." Marcus said he preferred 911. He asked me if I was a musician, I told him why I was there. He said that having only one fan (me) there wasn't good. He asked who played the congas. I told him and that the percussionists (Smoke & Jacques), don't have to come to every rehearsal.
Halima came in.
They worked on Alicia Keys' Unbreakable, which samples Eddie Kendricks' Intimate Friends.
Someone came in and handed out flyers for the upcoming Sunday shows at National Grill featuring Halima.
She said she didn't want do the rap yet to Lil Kim's Lighters Up. They said she could just sing the verse. They worked on that too. She talked about the lines about places in DC, they said she's from Maryland, she said Miami. They talked about changing places to Rockville, etc. I said, "Bethesda!"
Lorenzo talked about doing Funkadelic's Maggot Brain. He asked Doc if he knew the part, Doc said there wasn't much to it. Lorenzo then asked Dwayne if he knew it. Dwayne said he should receive a demerit just for asking.
I went to my car and unfortunately got a headache. It was bizarre because I didn't have it until I was in my car. So I didn't go to see Mambo Sauce, even though I wanted to.
